When are fresh peaches, plums and nectarines available?

California peaches, plums and nectarines are available from April through October. The peak season is May through September.

Why is California such a good place to grow peaches, plums and nectarines?

California's San Joaquin Valley, the main growing area, has excellent soil for stone fruit trees and a climate that's ideal for the crop: a cool but not cold winter, mild and warm springtime temperatures, and a long, warm, dry, sunny summer. Stone fruit trees are sensitive to cold as well as sudden changes in weather during their bloom time in early spring, and the stable, dry climate of the San Joaquin Valley is ideal. The long summer means many different varieties can be planted to provide a succession of fruit all season long. Ample California sunshine and warmth helps fruit grow and develop sweet flavor and beautiful skin color.

How many varieties of peaches, plums and nectarines are grown in California?

California grows more than 200 varieties of peaches, more than 175 varieties of nectarines and more than 200 varieties of plums. Each has its own specific harvest time, flavor and color characteristics. Each peach, plum or nectarine variety is harvested for about ten to fourteen days, so the varieties available are always changing as the season progresses. California fruit breeders work to develop delicious varieties that ripen at different times in order to produce a constant supply throughout the season.
